Back Four Nights in St. Bartholomew

Last Updated: April 8, 2019

On a perfect spring day, I took off to explore the ridge way along the Heiligenberg from Heidelberg to Ziegelhausen in Germany. The prospect of the university village with its houses, streets, squares and churches, with the famous old bridge across the Neckar river and last not least the wide spread ruins of the Heidelberg castle was overwhelming.

Leaving the trail and descending to the ferry boat to cross the Neckar river in Ziegelhausen the chimes of St. Batholomew attracted my curiosity and I visited the Vespers (early evening service) in Stift Neuburg, a small Benedictine monastery. Coming late I was immediately blown away by the Gregorian Chants performed by the monks. Afterwards I found a small notice on the church’s billboard offering rooms of students in the dormitory inside the enclosure. I applied and was successful. For the next three years the small monastery became the center of my live besides my studies at the university. In remembrance of these years I decided to dedicate a story to Stift Neuburg and its great monks.

The monastery was founded shortly after the first crusade resulting in the siege of Jerusalem and the total devastation of the glorious city of Isa ibn Maryam in 1195. Using this information, I devised a plot between a twenty-first century teen, called Anselm and a twelfth-century teen called Aenis, surviving the disaster of Jerusalem together with his beloved brother Zeki.<

In the story Anselm sets out to unveil the secret of the monastery’s crypt and gets severely injured during this endeavor. After Zeki’s premature death due to a sword combat Aenis finds his vocation in bringing injured young man back to live, however not only during his short earthly life but although through all the centuries to come. In the story Aenis saves Anselm and while Anselm’s vigor returns Aenis vigor withers away.
